Steps to Calculate the Duration

  1. Identify the Times
    • Determine your starting time and ending time.
    • Your goal is to subtract the starting time from the ending time.
  2. Convert to 24-Hour Format (if needed)
    • If your times are in 12-hour format, convert them to 24-hour time.
    • For AM times, the hour remains the same.
    • For PM times, add 12 to the hour.
      Example: 1:00 PM becomes 13:00.
  3. Compare the Minutes
There are two cases to consider based on the minutes of the start and end times:
    • Case A: Ending Time Minutes ≥ Starting Time Minutes
      • Simply subtract the hours and the minutes directly.
      • Example:
        End Time: 13:57
        Start Time: 9:22
        Calculation:
        Hours: 13 − 9 = 4
        Minutes: 57 − 22 = 35
        Duration: 4 hours 35 minutes
    • Case B: Ending Time Minutes < Starting Time Minutes
      • Since the ending minutes are less, “borrow” 60 minutes from the ending hour.
      • Reduce the ending hour by 1 and add 60 to the ending minutes.
      • Then perform the subtraction.
      • Example:
        End Time: 13:57
        Start Time: 9:58
        Adjusted End Time:
        • New Hour: 13 − 1 = 12
        • New Minutes: 57 + 60 = 117
          Calculation:
          Hours: 12 − 9 = 3
          Minutes: 117 − 58 = 59
          Duration: 3 hours 59 minutes

This approach ensures you account for situations where the minutes in the ending time are not enough to cover the minutes in the starting time.
